It is true that this friends you are talking about which only few talk in real life but this is the beautiful thing when you find this kind of people you know that they can become good friends of yours.This is the main idea of a social network.

I found social networking as a tool which had been primarily designed for social interaction and sharing. You can gain lots of friends and build reputation over the net.

Means that those who wish to market to you now have all your data plus all your friends and their friends and their friends data with which to cloud your, now bullshit, life - with their inane mass produced 'product!' Social Networking is NON LIFE and insidiously 'product oriented' wherein YOU are the product being exploited to the max! Humanity ultimately will regurgitate this trash to the dust bins of history as the anti-social networking movement engeanders a new thirst for...the handshake, the kiss...

My first thought was this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik.... Primates and other animals groom each other to forge social bonds. "Micro-socializing" might be a human analog of that.

Based on the the picture on slide #9 in that slide show, it looks like the presenter actually touched on this idea. But I think "Social Grooming" is a better phrase than "Ambient Intimacy." Gives the idea a broader context. =)

The bad part is the criminal activities being staged on social networking sites in India. People are very liberal in sharing the personal details on scrap pages. I hate the so called social networking products. They are useless. I've discussed about their impacts at http://www.yemkay.com/?p=32

I have a tough time calling social networking sites "product". They are 100% reliant on people feeding the system for the system to really mean anything. Facebook's definition is actually more accurate. It isn't a product. The people are the product. Facebook is just a utility that enables the product.
